Colfax High School
In 1923, a new school was built of brick and had 8-12 rooms. The principal was Eber F. Cude.The elementary school was 1st-7th grades and the high school was 8th-11th grades. Students attended school on buses for the first time. Students were picked up on one of three gray buses and high school students drove them. The school year was increased to nine months over time. Children were required to attend school until age 16. Schools had teachers and principals. Once these schools were opened, the one room schools were all closed. In 1924, there were 706 high schools in North Carolina.

There were nine students who graduated from Colfax Public School to become the first class to complete eleven years of education in 1925. Sometime between 1926-1930, Mrs. Jessie Strader built a two-story white house next to the playground. Mrs. Strader and her daughters lived downstairs. Upstairs, there were four bedrooms that provided housing for the teachers. Many of the teachers lived at the Strader house while teaching at Colfax.
In 1924, Wendell H. Cude became principal. He remained at Colfax until 1945. In 1934, an additional six-room building which included a home economics room and a science laboratory was added to the school. In 1950, a modern well-equipped cafeteria was built. The gymnasium was added in 1955 and in 1957 an agricultural building was added to house the newly added agriculture department.
John McCrummen became principal in 1945 and remained until 1948, at which time Warren W. Omohundro became principal. Arnold L. Bolen became the principal in 1955 and served for many years.
