Much of the information used to create this website and the Colfax history display came from a valuable resource. It is a book, compiled by Gail Gray Lawson. Mrs. Lawson grew up in Colfax and was a member of the last graduating class from Colfax High School. Without her dedication, we wouldn't know so much about the history of our school and community. Recently, she came to the school and we had the amazing opportunity to speak with her and find out how the book came to be.
When asked how she came up with the idea for a book, Mrs. Lawson said she was visiting her son in Florida and saw a book there that was the history of a small K-12 school. She returned to North Carolin and got started doing her research. She finished the book in just nine months, working day and night meeting with people to obtain photographs and find out the names of the people in the picture. Originally, it was just supposed to be a book with a page for each graduating class, but it became much more of a chronicle of the history of Colfax School. Mrs. Lawson sold out of the first printing and ordered a second printing and has now sold out of those as well. It serves as a valuable historical record for the people of the Colfax community.
