The One Room School House
One room schools were built by parents and heated by a wood stove. The parents paid a fee to the teacher for their children to attend, usually $2 for child per quarter. In 1939, there were forty schools operating in Guilford County. The school year ran for about four months, November - February, as was the current Public School Law at the time. There were 20-40 students from all grade levels, with one teacher. Teachers often lived with the families throughout the school term. This building was located on Cider Road, off of Sandy Ridge Road.
Students used memorization to learn, as there were very few textbooks available. Slate boards were shared by the students, as were pencils and paper.
